Scope and Contents

Yellowstone is the first and oldest of our National Parks. In addition to its unspoiled mountain scenery of every kind it offers nearly 3000 geysers and hot springs and more wild animals than any other place in America. The Park is the center of 14,000,000 acres of National Forests comprising a great mountain paradise of unspoiled wilderness, dotted with Rivers, Lakes, Glaciers; abounding with animal like and threaded by miles of trails.

The avenues to the Park all pass through some of this great mountain country so every trip into Yellowstone offers a different spectacle of beauty. From the east the Cody Way offers 90 miles of sensational scenery thru the Buffalo Bill country. The Shoshone Dam and Shoshone Canon make a striking beginning and every stretch of the way bring new delights of fantastic rock, great cliffs, rugged forests, and beautiful streams. From the northeast the Red Lodge-Cooke Highway offers sights different from any other entrance. Rising to nearly 11,000 feet this road travels far above timberline over the creates of the Beartooth Mountains and the most rugged scenery imaginable. From the north two great aisles between high ranges lead to Yellowstone. One from Livingston travels Paradise Valley along the Yellowstone River to Gardiner and up Gardiner Cannon to Mammoth Hot Springs. The other leads from Bozeman up the Gallatin River Valley between ten thousand-foot peaks, traversing 93 miles of thrilling mountain scenery. West Yellowstone, the terminus of the Gallatin Way, is also the west entrance to the Park. A fine oiled road leads up from Idaho thru the dense rolling Targhee Forest over Targhee Pass. The south entrance is from the Tetons over the rolling hills and forests to West Thumb on Lake Yellowstone.

The Grand Loop Highway leading from Mammoth to Norris, and then to Madison Junction, thence to Old Faithfull, then to West Thumb, along the shores of Lake Yellowstone to Lak and Fishing Bridge, then to Cannon Junction, Tower Falls, and back to Mammoth again takes the traveler to all principal points of interest in the Park. The most thrilling sights are Old Faithful, the Grand Canon and Falls of the Yellowstone, and the Bears. Aside from these highlights however there are scores of beautiful pools and hot springs, exquisite lakes, splendid waterfalls, delightful trails, and beauty spots galore among which the visitor may spend days or weeks of happiness.
