23 Photograph Collection

1 Buffalo Bill Dam & Spillway – This dam was built in 1905 and at that time was the highest dam in the world. It is 328’ high, 208’ wide, 10’ thick at top and 104’ thick at the base.

2 Buffalo Bill Bam & Power Plant – This plant generates power for most of N.W. Wyo. Picture also show the old highway thru canyon which was used until new tunnel was finished in 1961.

3 Buffalo Bill Reservoir – This supplies water and irrigation for all of the surrounding area. Capacity – 400,000-acre feet.

4 Inlet of Spillway - – This man – made spillway carries the water thru the mountain and is emptied into the Shoshone River.

5 Laughing Pig Rock – 25 miles from Cody on road to Yellowstone.

6 Holy City – 27 miles from Cody on road to Yellowstone.

7 Henry Ford Rock – 39 Miles from Cody on road to Yellowstone.

8 Elephant Head Rock – 40 Miles from Cody on road to Yellowstone.

9 Chimney Rock – 41 Miles from Cody on road to Yellowstone. This is the last rock formation you see before entering the Park.

10 Sylvan Pass – This pass takes you up about 8000’. You will start the incline just after entering the East Entrance of Park.

11 Sylvan Lake – Located just over the summit of Sylvan Pass. Not the largest lake in the Park, but one of the prettiest.

12 Yellowstone Canyon – 2 ½ miles wide in certain places and over 1300’ deep. The sides of this canyon are yellow and gold rock. This is how the Park originally was named.

13 Upper Fall – Located on the Yellowstone River at the southern end of Yellowstone Canyon. This fall has a 108’ drop.

14 Lower Falls – Located on the Yellowstone River in the central part of the Yellowstone Canyon. The Lower Falls drops 312’ which is higher than Niagara.

15 Angel Terrace – Located at Mammoth Hot Springs on the upper look of the Park. This is a natural hot spring which, over the years, has left limestone deposits creatin a “terrace – like’ effect.

16 Castle Geyser- Located in the upper geyser basin between Norris Junction and Old Faithful. It is one of the prettiest geysers in the Park because of its cone-shaped base.

17 Old Faithful Geyser – There are more than 65 geysers in the Park and this one is by far the most famous and most popular. It erupts once every 45 to 90 minutes at a height of between 45’ to 180’ feet. Eruptions can last anywhere from 30 seconds to 8 or 9 minutes.

18 Old Faithful Inn – This is the largest log building in the world. The Main lodge is 4 stories tall and has a perimeter of 1.2 miles.

19 Grotto Geyser – Located in the lower geyser basin. Does not erupt like most of the others – instead it just boiled and gurgles all the time.

20 Punch Bowl – This is one of the many hot mineral pools. It has reached temperatures of over 200 degrees.

21 Fishing Cone – Located on the shore of Yellowstone Lake at West Thumb. Legend is that this pool got its name from the old pioneers who would fish out of the lake and then cook them right in the pool!

22 Moonlight over Yellowstone Lake – Has a 110-mile shoreline and is the largest lake in the country over 7000’ elevation

23 Grand Tetons and Jackson Lake – Located 33 miles south of Yellowstone in Teton National Park. They have an elevation of 13,800; and it is said by many people that this is one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world.
